I know, I know, I promised something musical, but my song for Hogmanay was a bit belated, my “Goodbye Catherine-Margaret” has a target audience of one (ok 10 then), and “Black Dog” (by lDW) just seemed too depressing for January.
In a perfect world I’d have done a cover of “Here comes the sun” but while I can play it -on a good day – trying to record it on the laptop, just winds up with me watching my own fingering, then messing up.
Why “Here comes the sun”?
Well quite apart from the seasonally cheering subject, and the fact that it might be the most complex thing I can play, (more or less correctly). It was also my recovery piece after my stroke. I had just, I use the word – “mastered”- tentatively, the song (a long term personal goal) when I lost the motor control in my right hand.
It was my personal specific measure, I had to be able to perform it again, and then I would know I had fully recovered. While I have no recording of it for you today, I am happy to say that I did make that recovery and I can play the piece. (proof will follow)
This was brought back into my focus very clearly when a young friend/relative/inlaw? was very recently struck down with a life threatening stroke, and as part of the process of recovery, she too is practising guitar. I send her every hope for a full recovery, and the patience endure the small steps that it takes.
She, and her oldest boy, are skipping for Februray to raise money for a stroke charity. I am minded that I too, should be undertaking some new challenge to “give back” and perhaps entertain the masses? I am a bit on the big side for skipping, and sadly(?) I exceed the (safe#) weight limit for the “death slide” across the Clyde, so I invite input or suggestion from you all (without making some open-ended commitment; I know Tam too well). What challenge should I undertake? or perhaps more pertinently, what will you pay (a good cause) hansomely to see me attempt?
Next week on IaDL : What is the world record for eating pork pies?
# I am unclear how the “Death slide” can have a “safe limit” , but no-one said it has to make sense!
