(Feb)
For those of us in relationships, February has a tendency to focus on the 14th of the month, what card? what gift? dinner?. V -day.
I told my “good” Valentines story several (dozen) Dog’s lives ago, but, I now find out there’s just so much more to celebrate:
Of course as an Scottish ex-student I am well familiar with “Meal Monday “(12) when I may hike back to the croft for a fresh sack of oats to see me through the term, and I’d be raising several glasses to toast my Pagan roots on “Imbolic” (today 1) but it seems improper when it clashes with “World Interfaith Harmony week” (1-7), but I will certainly go and stand in a puddle tomorrow for “World Wetlands Day”(2).
However, I can reveal that we live a relatively sheltered life on this side of the pond, as our American cousins seem determined that – every day must be special- this month bringing us,(and I’m not making these up); “Super Bowl Sunday” (11) this year clashing with “Inventors Day”(also 11), but surely eclipsed by “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day (3) ” {In Feb?}, “National Frozen Youghurt Day”(5), “National Wear Red Day” (2), {on Candlemass too, what are they thinking?}, “I want Butterscotch Day “(15) and “Random Acts of Kindness Day (17)”, and more promisingly “National Margarita Day” (22), which I’m going to celebrate religiously from now on.
Still one cannot blame the Americans alone, I guess the drab year start has encouraged the downcast across the entire globe to seek any excuse for a party.
In the communist bloc one could not (obviously) gift on a saints day! But perhaps a sly declaration of romantic interest could perhaps be slipped in to a card for “International Duties Memorial Day!” (15) {the ! is presumably compulsory} although in Singapore they hold the more relaxed “Total Defence Day (15)” {should probably be in bold, all caps}.
Georgia apparantly celebrates(?) “Soviet Occupation Day” (25), I can only assume this involves lots of Vodka, while over the Baltics the rather more understandable “Restoration of Lithuanias Statehood Day” (16) sounds like a party to me.
International organisations bear some blame too, as “Baden Powel Day” (22), also falls on the Girl Guides “World Thinking Day” (22) {thinking about a Margarita?}, and “Polar Bear Day” (27) just doesn’t work with “Anosmia Awareness Day”(27).
I suspect I’ll probably just stick to chocolates for my own safety, although I might buy an “Icelandic Wives day” (18) card as a joke. If that goes badly wrong, you could send me a token on “Bachelors Day”(29), it’ll be while before you get the chance again.
Next week on IaDL. Big party on the horizon….
