(How much? )
Younger son is back with us here in Bonnie Scotland. Returned safely to the bosom of his familly. Reunited with his kin.
His reaction to being home after living a year independently in Japan??
Wow! Everything is sooo expensive here!
Frankly, he’s actually right.
While we holidayed there, there was some comment about how we were always eating in such “expensive” (Japanese) places, places that Chris and I thought were comparatively cheap. If we could have brought petrol back in our pockets, we would have saved about 40p a litre (I guess because Japan is such a big oil producer??). We didn’t feel any need to buy the 3 litre bottle of whisky (Johnny Walker Red label) for… (does the math) £18.
As a farewell to Japan, Ben went to an extremely high restaurant and ordered the top-grade wagyu beef. He reports that this, “as expensive as it gets” dinner (with all trimmings) did not equate to £20 (and no tips).
On a more mundane level, I ate with my son at his local “ramen shop”, a lunch/breakfast serving of pork, noodles, eggs, and veg. that would certainly have passed for dinner, (even by me), which, if I remember correctly, was about £3. Contrasts poorly against a £4.50 poke of chips (nothing special) that I purchased locally recently.
It’s a rather sad indictment, but our son poses a valid question.
Next week on IaDL… Now that’s what I call the blues
Ok, so I can’t count. The no expense spared meal would be ~£30 (Not £20) but I’ve still spent that on pizza eating out here.
