It’s a Dog’s Life…

( A life in nightshifts )

First nightshift, and I slept till 9:00# (a really long lie), and went back to bed, to no avail at 15:00, gave up at 16:00 started work at 21:00 and was completely used up as a human being by the time I was driving home at 07:00.

I am in bed by 08:00 and up at the crack of 13:00 – this is less good. I go back to bed at 16:00 and surprise myself by sleeping till 18:00, work from 21:00 to 07:00, drive wakefully home and have (another ) breakfast before going to bed at 09:00

I am woken at 12:00 (delivery) I return to bed at 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 collecting about 1 hours sleep between all three efforts. My drive to work at 20:00 is punctuated by yawns, and I have no memory of the shift or my drive home at 0700.

I wake up at 16:00,- Hooray! Have dinnerfast and breeze into work at 21:00. I am home before 08:00 but off tonight, so, I set an alarm for 13:00. I actually wake at 12:00 so get up to experience some of my day off. At 16:00 I am so tired I have to go for a lie-down and wake at 18:00 for family meal, retiring to bed at the civilised hour of 22:00. Unfortunately I click awake at 01:00 (dinnertime!) and have to read till 03:00 before I am tired enough to believe sleep might come back.

I actually get up at 10:00 it might be today, it’s probably tomorrow. I have a near normal day, apart from a total energy failure around 17:00, which I recover from at bed time.

My last day off, and I wake in the morning and sit up as late as I can. By 01:00 I can no longer keep my eyes open, so hoping to sleep late I retire.

Nightshift again (that’s the job) and I am awake at 09:00 despite my efforts at a late bedtime. A nap at 1400 and again at 1700 and by then it’s too late to go back. So into work for 21:00. It’s a quiet shift, which means I’ve been here for about 8 hours already and it’s only 01:00…

I amaze that I can still tell you it’s New-vember. No wonder I drink (coffee).

Next week on IaDL : It’ll be December so I can use the “C” word, Hohoho

(#No I don’t wake or sleep right on the hour every hour…round numbers for ease of telling)
