(party!)
Most everyone who will read this was probably there anyway.
It was the fifth 60th I’ve attended this year, and when the birthday boy is known for being, or having been, the bass player in several bands, some kind of live music is unavoidable and reunions are inevitable.
“No Shame”, with three guesting drummers, continues to demonstrate that age is no barrier to stage presence, and, no matter how long it may be since they played together, they still have “it”.
I am somewhat less certain that the impromptu surprise (to me!) of a “Tone Pigs” reunion demonstrated quite the same “je ne se quoi”, although the bonus of having Colin guest (on the bass to allow Martian a beer) did allow me the much anticipated – La Bamba into Twist and Shout duet, which I’ve been waiting to perform with Mr Campbell these past twenty years. It also gave an excuse (if any were needed) for young Mr Richard to Wow with his drumming prowess, particularly on that old Dalmallyfest finale – Wipeout! (cue fireworks!).
Of course, he also went on to bury us oldies with his solo performances on guitar and harmonica – wouldn’t have been allowed in my day!
I should mention guest appearances by Susan (and Susan), and also acknowledge that stalwart performances also took place off-stage by other veteran stalwarts, in the provision of food, and the considerable task of loading and out (we get no younger, and were happy at the lack of stairs).
Some random Blues combo saw the night out, till the plug was pulled.
We may all be getting older, and our knees creakier, but it appears we can still party!
Happy Birthday Martian.
Next time on IaDL : What do you mean, they glued the tiles on the roof?
