I know, I know I said there would be photos, but they’re on my phone taken by other people (mostly) and in WhatsApp groups or Messenger files, and I’m back on nights a day early and my will to live (or at least, to wrestle with the download send upload) is severely diminished.

I dont “work out” in a conventional sense. I have a short personal regime of bending annd stretching exercises focusing mainly on ballance and flexibility. (That and the steps). I’m not religious about my exercises, shift work provides plenty of excuses to leave it another day, but it’s a rare week where I don’t run through things 3-4 times.

When I hurt my back recently (see whinging in the last few dogs lives), I felt unable to attempt much of the strtching for about 2 weeks. Doesn’t really seem that long, so I was agahst to discover that, from being able to touch my fist to the ground with relative ease, I could not quite touch my toes (my hamstrings did not want to play).

It’s a shocking discovery, which I’m now desperately trying to recover (can touch second knuckle to ground), but a very salutary lesson in the need to “keep doing”. I get a brief glimpse into the difficulties faced by those who, through illness or injury, face an enforced longer period of inactivity.

Of course, this does not just apply to such overt physical skills. The need to be continually playing guitar, and my failure to do so, looms large on my personal horizon, and while this is indeed a function of co-orrdination, the role of memory in the shape and words is equally critical. I don’t sing enough ( YMMV- perhaps I sing too much!) and I’ve ceratinly let my poetry recital slip. I do get a bit of mental work out with my inevitable gaming (so it is good for something), but the skills of argument and debate lie rusting in a cupboard.

Memory, they say, it’s the first thing …the first… say why am I in the kitchen?

Next time on IaDL, Photos, no really!
