It’s a Dog’s Life…

(Arithmetic)

Although the actual money has yet to appear, the legal matters attending my late mum’s estate have now been resolved.

This does not involve – as they like to put it – a life changing sum – but is a surprising amount for an lady in her eighties who had been a full time mum and housewife. It is more of a testament to a life lived on very frugal lifestyle.

Annual income; twenty pounds, annual expenditure; nineteen pounds eleven shillings and sixpence – result happiness. Mr Micawber would be pleased (Readers of a younger age may actually have to go to the library for that one).

It does however, encourage me to once again revisit the XL table of “where does all our money go?” (the stock answer is; “away”). Bank accounts are logged into, pension payments checked, passwords struggled over, two part authentication verified (am I checking my bank, or accessing CIA records at Langley?).

Apparently my ISA is rubbish, I haven’t kept up with the need(fad?) to change banks, I’m underestimating my insurance payments, and my pension will not last till I’m 95.

Crushed by these calculations, I decide I will live only to 75, simplifying everything, but apparently increasing my tax burden? My note books and backs of envelopes (another mystery to the youngsters) are covered with questionable addition.

Worse still, it seems that of my annual income £20, I am regularly spending £20 and tuppence, no wonder I’m miserable…

Time to count pennies more closely – Bah Humbug I say!
